To you who are suffering from depression
(Last Update: )
In Japan, there is a survey result that about 6 out of 100 people experience depression at least once in their lifetime.
While you may not be able to tell those around you, there are likely many who are also troubled by depression, thinking, "Actually, I..."
To save you, I have chosen a "prescription for the heart" from the teachings of Ryuho Okawa.

Finding your good points

If you think, "I am inferior to that person" or "If I don't do this, it will be a failure," you might end up thinking, "I am a worthless person," but isn't there a slightly different perspective?
Compared to when I was in elementary school, I must have grown quite a bit.
In my teens, I worried that "I might never get married with such a self," but now I might be worrying that "I have a bad wife."
However, from the perspective of the self who thought, "I can't get married," isn't it a great achievement just to say, "I got married"?
Also, there might be a perspective that says, "Even with such a bad wife, it is commendable that I continue to support her."
For those who are troubled by their child's poor performance, there is a perspective that says, "Even with such a poor child, it is amazing that I am raising them."
For someone who is a regular employee at 60 years old, there is a perspective that says, "Even at 60, being a regular employee and continuing to work shows great passion," and there is also a perspective that says, "Just not being sick is quite something."
For those troubled by their hair, there is a perspective that says, "Among many who lose all their hair, even if I look like Xavier, just having a little hair left is impressive," or "I have turned gray, but with a romantic gray, I look cool."
Since there are such perspectives, if people don't praise you much, it is good to occasionally praise yourself.
However, praising yourself in front of others by saying, "I am great, great" is likely to be embarrassing.
Sometimes there are people who praise themselves by putting others down, saying, "You are worthless. I am great." While there may be some justification for this as self-defense, if you do it all the time, people will dislike you.
There is no need to praise yourself in front of others; you can do it alone.
It might be excessive to do it every day, but once a week, you might feel like, "I am in such a depressed state, so maybe I will praise myself this time."
It is about thinking, "I might have some good points." At the very least, compared to my past self, I have grown in some way.
It is not true that "everything is a failure. Everything is worse than before." There is definitely progress in some aspect.
Causes of Depression and Ways to Overcome It
When depression lasts for a long time, there is possession by evil spirits.

If the state of depression continues for at least 3 months, it is safe to assume that there is some form of possession by evil spirits.
The heart's needle (thoughts) can point in any direction, just like the hands of a clock, and can point to both the heavenly realm and the hellish realm, but in a state of depression, it is as if it is stuck pointing at a certain point in the hellish realm.
As a result, beings in that direction in the hellish realm resonate with that person's heart. Therefore, similar companions gather around.
Lost spirits can come and possess that person. For example, those who committed suicide due to depression find it difficult to ascend to the heavenly realm. Usually, they cannot ascend until their original lifespan is reached.
Until then, they search among the living for someone similar to themselves, and when they find such a person, they possess them and try to make similar things happen to them as happened in their own life. They try to drag them into the world of hell.
Shining brightly through 'self-generation'

So, what is fundamental treatment?
There is a term called 'self-generation.' It means generating electricity at your own home rather than receiving it from a power plant.
This 'self-generation' is necessary for the treatment of depression. In short, it is very important for that person to generate electricity within their own heart.
Therefore, the key is how to turn the generator, how to let energy overflow from within oneself, how to make oneself feel bright, and how to make oneself shine.
Self-generation points
(1) Have a heart of gratitude towards others
What I want to mention first is that 'people in a state of depression do not have a heart of gratitude towards others.'
Therefore, you should start by having a heart of gratitude for the fact that 'I have received various help from others. My life up to now exists as a result of the efforts of many people.'
By having that heart of gratitude, it is important to discover that 'I have actually been blessed.'
(2) Strongly hold the feeling that 'I am a child of God'
The second point is to strongly hold the feeling that 'I am a child of God.'
I actually want to encourage reflection, but if a person in a state of depression enters reflection too quickly, they may end up further tormenting themselves and becoming even more miserable.
Therefore, it is better to enter reflection a little later, and instead, it is better to strongly hold the feeling that 'I am a child of God.'
It is important to have a strong awareness that 'I am originally a child created by God. I am a child of light created by God' and to have a sense of importance towards oneself.
I think the teachings of Christianity are wonderful, and I also think the teachings of Catholicism are good, but because those teachings strongly incorporate the ideas of 'original sin' and 'humans are children of sin,' some Christians tend to accept them too literally and cannot see the bright side.
However, if you change your perspective, the world is filled with wonderful things.
On the highways in Brazil, at first, there was a lot of dirty garbage outside the road, but eventually, the cars began to run in places where there was no garbage.
Do you look at the garbage? Or do you look ahead at the road? Depending on where you look, you will see different things.
Therefore, it is important to think about 'what am I looking at,' and if your eyes are always directed towards dark things, it is important to make an effort to look towards the bright side of the world. This can be done simply by changing the direction of your heart.
For example, there are many people who think, "I am a boring person with no redeeming qualities." Many people with depression feel this way.
However, if you think carefully about yourself, it shouldn't be that way. If you ask others, "What are my good points?" they will quickly list five or six.
You can recognize the good points of others. However, those who blame their own shortcomings often find it difficult to see that.
Acknowledging your own good points honestly can also serve as energy for self-motivation.
(3) Accumulate small successes
Once the direction of your life starts to look brighter and you begin to get on track, it is important to accumulate small successes.
First, aim for small successes instead of large ones, and build your confidence.
Once you have accumulated small successes and gained confidence, only then will you have the strength to humbly reflect on your shortcomings.
I believe that such steps are important.
Consider the abundance of what is given to you

Some people may think that being "born as a human" is a "bad thing."
However, compared to animals, humans are truly fortunate. We can do various things freely. I think it is truly something to be grateful for.
Most animals cannot speak. They also do not receive a salary for their work. Police dogs may work, but they are not paid.
Humans can earn a salary, even if it is low, and thereby gain economic freedom. Being "human" is indeed a precious and grateful thing.
In this way, it is important to change your perspective a little and consider the abundance of what is given to you. You should not easily fall into drugs or alcohol.
It is also necessary not to be overly caught up in comparisons with others. There are many people in the world, so whether you look up or down, it is endless.
When you see someone superior to you in something you are interested in, if you tend to think, "I am no good," it would be better to change that mindset.
Instead of thinking that way, when you see someone who is successful in an area you are interested in, celebrate their wonderful qualities and think, "I want to be like that person. That person is ideal for me," and cultivate a feeling of admiration for them.
By doing so, you can also move closer to that person.
Believe in yourself and wait for the time when your strength will fill up, like filling a jar with drops of water.

It is about believing in yourself. Deeply believing. Believing that you are a child of the Buddha. Believing that you have Buddha-nature.
It is about believing that "even if I cannot exert my strength now, the time will surely come again. The seasons will change."
It is about believing that "autumn passes, winter passes, and spring comes again."
During such times, do not move around; instead, like filling a large jar with drops of water, accumulate your strength. Then, eventually, as the time comes, your strength will also fill up. Energy will accumulate.
There may be periods of about six months, one year, or even three years. During such times, struggling too much will only increase your suffering.
During such times, with the mindset of collecting raindrops in a bottle, please remain still and persist. The time when your strength will fill up will surely come.
Writing down your worries helps clarify what you should do.

You may have many worries and not understand, "What is causing my confusion and suffering from depression? Why do I feel unmotivated and have a bleak outlook on the future?"
In such cases, what you should do, as I have mentioned several times in the past, is to "write down your worries on paper." This is a method I have actually practiced.
Prepare a sheet of paper and write down your worries.
Write down in bullet points, "What exactly is the problem? What am I worried about?"
How many can you write? It is difficult to write 100 worries. No matter how much you think, it is hard to come up with 100.
I remember when I was a rookie trading company employee, I tried to write down my worries, but no matter how much I thought, I could not come up with more than 20.
After writing down your worries, the next step is to look at them for a while and prioritize them. Rearrange the worries by importance and rewrite the list.
When you look at that list closely, you will notice that there are worries you can eliminate through your efforts and those you cannot. Some worries cannot be eliminated no matter how hard you try, while others can be resolved with effort. You will discern that.
For worries that you think cannot be eliminated, set them aside. You can mark them with a triangle or an X, but mark those you are putting aside and select those you think you can resolve.
Think about "which worries can be resolved."
Then, make an effort to eliminate the resolvable ones one by one, starting with the highest priority.
