【Illustrated Explanation】What happens to people when they die? ~From cardiac arrest to 7 days after death, 49 days, and beyond~
(1) 0 hours after death (the soul leaves the body)
【Cardiac Arrest (Medical Death)】
When the heart stops and the body dies, the soul leaves the body and, in many cases, looks down at its own body from above. At this stage, the 'spiritual thread' that connects the soul and the body is still intact, and the soul can still feel the pain of the body.
A spirit that has just passed away has a spirit body that closely resembles its physical body and can think and move, making it difficult to realize that it is dead, often calling out to those around it.
(2) 24 hours after death (true death)
【Wake】
The wake is usually held one day after death to wait for the 'spiritual thread' that connects the soul and the body to break. If the body is cremated immediately after death, the soul suffers because it is still connected to the body and cannot peacefully depart to the afterlife.
(3) A few days to about a week after death (awareness of death progresses)
【Funeral】
The funeral is not just a ritual; it is very important for the soul of the deceased to realize their death and embark on their journey to the afterlife.
By seeing their own photo displayed at the wake or funeral, they gradually begin to accept their own death.
The chanting by the monk is originally meant to help the deceased realize this.
(4) About 7 to 49 days after death (crossing the 'Sanzu River' and determining the destination after death)
【First Seven Days to Forty-Nine Days】
The soul remains around the home for about seven days after death, but is encouraged to depart to the afterlife by 'guiding spirits'.
The guiding spirits are usually relatives who have passed away before and are suitable for persuasion. However, only those who have 'returned to heaven' come. To ensure that the soul can peacefully depart to the afterlife, memorial services are held at milestones such as 'First Seven Days' and 'Forty-Nine Days'.
When departing to the spirit world, one crosses the 'Sanzu River', which is the boundary between this world and the next (Click here for details ).
After that, in a place like a movie theater called 'Shoma Theater', the thoughts and actions from their lifetime are projected as images, and they return to a world that matches their state of mind.
The spirit world is vast and divided into multiple layers of dimensions. The higher the dimension, the closer the beings are to the divine, and within the fourth-dimensional world closest to this world, there exists what is commonly referred to as 'hell' (for more about hell, click here ).
(5) After 49 days (occasionally looks down on the earth)
【Burial】
Recently, 'scattering ashes' and 'tree burials' have become popular, but graves serve as a connection for souls that do not realize they are dead and are wandering. Additionally, they act as an 'antenna' for the living to offer their thoughts of remembrance to the deceased. Creating a grave and burying the deceased is very important.
(6) A few months after death (occasionally connects with this world → is reborn into this world)
【Obon and Other Memorials】
During Obon, ancestor worship becomes active. During this time, communication between the spirit world and the earth becomes lively, and it is said that 'the gates of hell open'.
Moreover, even after the first Obon (the first Obon after death), by occasionally honoring ancestors, one can offer light not only to spirits who have returned to heaven but also to those who have fallen into hell.
However, if the understanding of those offering the memorial is low, they may be influenced by the negative aspects of wandering spirits after death. It is essential for those offering memorials to learn about the afterlife and engage in spiritual training.
【Reincarnation (Cycle of Birth and Death)】
Spirits that have returned to heaven are reborn into this world after spending a certain period in the spirit world for further soul training. By accumulating different experiences in a new era and environment, people aim for eternal improvement.

Answers to Readers' Questions
We will answer the questions received from those who have read the article based on the teachings of Happy Science.
[Question]
I am a vocational student.
Recently, my grandfather passed away, and I have been thinking a lot about life and death.
To be honest, I am afraid of death.
If I were to die, would my current memories and consciousness disappear? Thinking about that scares me, and every day I find myself whispering in my mind, 'I don't want to die, I want to live.'
I like to look at the sky. But if I were to die, would I never be able to gaze at the sky again? Would I be able to be reborn and see the blue sky again?
Thinking about that is very frightening.
[Answer]
It's scary to think about 'death', isn't it?
The essence of us humans is the soul, and we are beings living eternal lives. (This is also referred to as the teaching of 'reincarnation '.) We travel between this world and the next, engaging in soul training. Even after death, the things we learned and experienced in this world become part of our individuality and are remembered by the soul.
Also, if you find yourself thinking about 'death' all day long, try to think about the future. 'Death' will inevitably come to everyone. Because it will surely come, it is important to first accept death, be grateful for the life you have today, and strive to make each day fulfilling while working towards the future.
If you absolutely cannot escape the fear of death, try 'praying' to God. Happy Science has a sutra called 'The Words of Truth: Shinshin Hōgo '. As you pray every day, a warm light that cannot be seen will gradually enter, and you will come to feel as if you are in a place like heaven where there is nothing to fear, and gradually your fear will dissipate. By continuing to pray and striving to maintain a bright and cheerful heart every day, I believe you will eventually be able to see the beautiful blue sky in heaven after your lifespan is over.
The movie 'Eternal Law ' also clearly introduces what it means for a person to die and what happens after death, so please take a look.

[Question]
Will I be able to meet my parents who passed away before me? I am almost 13 years old, and I can't stop thinking about death, which makes me cry and my heart race painfully.
[Answer]
That is a very painful situation.
I believe that your parents, who have now passed away, are watching over you as invisible souls, worried about your tears and suffering.
Death is not an eternal farewell.
Once you finish your life training in this world, you will be able to reunite in the next world.
The world of the afterlife where you can reunite with your parents is detailed in the book 'Eternal Law' by President Okawa, which has also been made into an animated film.
Please read the book or watch the movie.
There is one more thing I want to convey.
Even if you want to see your parents quickly, you must not commit suicide.
The souls of those who commit suicide often cannot go to heaven and end up wandering on earth.
>Suicide Prevention Site 'Bereavement'
Because you wish to reunite with your parents, please cherish the life given to you by them and walk through your life.
If you feel overwhelmed, please visit a branch or temple of Happy Science.
If that is difficult, it is also okay to call or send a message.
